The Oregon Trail is a computer game originally developed by Don Rawitsch, Bill Heinemann, and Paul Dillenberger in 1971 and produced by MECC in 1974. The original game was designed to teach school children about the realities of 19th century pioneer life on the Oregon Trail. The player assumes the role of a wagon leader guiding his party of settlers from Independence. A huge selection of classic educational games — including 'The Oregon Trail,' 'Number Munchers,' and 'Lemonade Stand' — are available online for free. There's no download required, either.

Developed in collaboration with the Indian Land Tenure Foundation and Michigan State University’s Games for Entertainment and Learning Lab thanks to support from the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians and contributions from over thirty Indigenous writers, artists, and musicians.

The game features over thirty Indigenous contributors with creative directing by Nichlas Emmons, creative directing, design, and user interface art by Elizabeth LaPensée, art by Weshoyot Alvitre, and music by Supaman and Michael Charette. Indigenous writers include Weshoyot Alvitre, Li Boyd, Trevino Brings Plenty, Tyrone Cawston, Richard Crowsong, Eve Cuevas, Samuel Jaxin Enemy-Hunter, Lee Francis IV, Carl Gawboy, Elaine Gomez, Ronnie Dean Harris, Tashia Hart, Renee Holt, Sterling HolyWhiteMountain, Adrian Jawort, Kris Knigge, E. The Oregon Trail 4th Edition is a great way for its players to exercise decision-making and learn American history at the same time. At a Glance The Learning Company, 800/716-8506 The Oregon Trail. I first played Oregon Trail 3rd Edition years and years ago, and decided to buy it again. The game is fun, the graphics are different than any of the other Oregon Trail computer versions (not counting the iPad versions.) This one, in my opinion, is the most fun out of the Oregon Trail games. The Oregon Trail is a video game published in 1990 on DOS by MECC. It's an educational and simulation game, set in a geography, history, managerial, real-time and western themes, and was also released on Mac and Apple II. Here is the video game “The Oregon Trail: 3rd Edition”! Released in 1997 on Windows, it's still available and playable with some tinkering. It's an educational and simulation game, set in an ecology / nature, geography, history, hunting, sailing / boating and western themes. Game Industry News wrote: 'I do find this game to be an excellent learning experience for players. It is marketed for people ages ten to adult, and even if you are an adult this game offers enough of a challenge coupled with entertainment to keep your interest'[4] The Hour wrote: 'This is an excellent role playing game for children ages 10 up to adults'.[5] Elizabeth Weal of the MacHome Journal said 'this upgrade of the simulation - with new full-motion video, improved graphics, and new players' decisions - makes the product even more engaging than its predecessors'.[6]

The 2002 book Designing Instruction for Technology-enhanced Learning suggested that edutainment properties that have been around for a long time, such as Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? and The Oregon Trail 'have been through many.evaluations, and the subsequent versions reflect careful attention to who is using the product and how well it sells'. It cited the then-recent The Oregon Trail 3rd Edition (1997) and Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego? (1996) as examples of this.[7]
